Basketball Three-point Shot

Aim: To improve the three-point shot technique.

Technique: To start this shot it is essential that players position themselves behind the three-point line.

Again much of the mechanics are the same as for the one-hand set shot and the jump shot. It is crucial that players keep their focus on the basket and not look down at the line. Keep the feet shoulder width apart and toes pointing straight ahead, and knees bent. The non-shooting hand should be under the ball and the shooting hand at the back of the ball, with the elbow tucked in. Jump without straining, and release the ball on the way up. Extend the legs, back, shoulders, and elbow, then flex the wrist, and fingers forwards. After release fingers should be pointed at the target, with the palm facing down.

To generate more power players can step into the shot. A smooth rhythm throughout the whole execution is very beneficial.

Shot Falls Short: This usually occurs because players do not generate the power through their legs, back, and shoulder, or possibly not following through fully, or their execution lacks rhythm. Concentrate on using the legs, back and shoulders more, over exaggerate the follow through, staying in position until after the ball has reached the basket, and this fault should be eliminated.
