WHAT IS BODY COMPOSITION?
One definition of body composition is: "The relative make-up of the body in muscle, fat, and other vital parts". Another definition is: "the percentage of body weight which is fat, muscle and bone". This means that we are looking at what the body is made of rather than simply how it looks.

Body weight is split into two areas:
1) % Body
2) Lean Body Mass - "the mass of bones, , connective tissue and organs".

The first thing that may spring to mind when thinking about body composition is "weight". There are numerous Height to tables which are supposed to tell you if you are underweight, overweight or just right. These are of limited use unless used in combination with other physical tests. Why do you think this is?
Height : Weight chart. Example: A Rugby player who is 5' 3" tall and 12 stone is indicated as "overweight" on a Height/Weight chart. Why do you think this is not really true?

Answer: Because the Rugby player has a large skeletal frame, large bones and heavily developed muscle bulk. He is still very fit and not OVERFAT. This is why we need to look at COMPOSITION of the body and not simply the WEIGHT.
