A joint is defined as: where bones meet. join bone to bone. They are tough, fibrous cords of tissue which are slightly flexible. They keep the joint together, allow for movement, and stop the bones from dislocating. Tendons join muscle to . They are a more flexible tissue (but not as flexible as a muscle). The below picture shows a common sports injury to the cartilage in the knee. You can see how the forms like a cushion over the bones. The red area indicates where the damage has occurred. It is extremely painful and is treated by specialists called " " or "orthapaedic surgeons". Can you identify the Tibia and Fibula bones? Cartilage acts as a shock absorber. There are three types. Each one does one of the following jobs:
1) Stops the knocking together or jarring by forming a "cushion".
2) Forms a , slippery coat on the ends of bones to stop them rubbing together.
3) Provides and structure (example - the end of your nose is cartilage!)
