- Can you give me two main areas of development currently targeted by the sports council of the U.K?
Answer: The UK Sports Council (now known as UK Sport) took responsibility for issues that need to be dealt with at UK level. So, in direct answer to your question, here are two areas "UK Sport" are currently leading.
1) The Anti-Doping Directorate:
This involves the prevention and testing of drugs in sport. The aim is to achieve a commitment to drug-free sport and ethical sporting practices. There is a 3 - pronged approach:
a) Prevention
b) Deterrence
c) Education.
UK Sport ensures the implementation of an effective testing programme and the encouraging of education programmes. They work closely with governing bodies' administrators, legal advisers, medical officers, together with national coaches and, the athletes themselves.
2) The World Class Performance Programme:
This scheme involves the improvement in funding at the elite sporting level. This includes money for:
- World Class Coaches
- Sports science and medicine back-up
- Warm-weather and acclimatization training
- International competition programmes (including travel and accommodation)
- Athlete development programmes
- Training facilities
- Performance Directors to bring it all together.
This initiative involves "Athlete Personal Awards" which are given out to elite athletes. The awards are not wages or salaries but contributions to ensure athletes can train and perform to the highest levels. They also help athletes to work more flexibly, or train full-time. The awards are a contribution towards basic living costs, personal training and sports equipment costs. Athletes may also apply for a contribution towards education costs.
- Is the patella an irregular bone or a flat bone because the text book
and my teacher have given contradicting answers?
Answer: Another bone of contention!
The patella is a flat (or plate) bone. Some might say that it is an irregular bone because it is not a perfectly flat shape. However, irregular bones usually have projections (bits that stick out).
- What is the definition of muscular strength?
Answer: Different text books will give you a different definition. However, a very good definition of muscular strength is:
The ability to exert an external force against a resistance. This should get you the mark in with any exam board. |
