Sporting Bodies and Organisations

  • The aim of this lesson is to learn about the job of a governing body and which ones do what within the UK (Equivalent to UK GCSE Physical Education)

There are loads and loads of different sporting bodies and organisations in the UK, let alone internationally. Every sport has a governing body, such as the Rugby Football Union (RFU) in rugby and the Football Association (FA) in football.

A governing body has four main roles:

  1. Upholding the rules of the sport and punishing those who break the rules (fining and banning teams and clubs)
  2. Promoting the sport to attract new players and spectators
  3. Organising international competitions (such as the world cup and european championships etc) and running the national team
  4. Organising competitions within the country (like the premier league and league cup)

Here are some examples of some national and international governing bodies:

UK Sport

UK sport used to be known as the Sports Council. Its job is to find and produce top sports people. This is how it does it:

  • Excellent support for the UK's top athletes
  • Promotes ethical behaviour and runs the UK's anti-doping programme
  • Applies to international governing bodies to get sporting events held in the UK
  • Improves the UK's profile and influence on the international stage

Each of the four home countries also have a sports council:

Sport England; Sport Scotland; Sports Council for Northern Ireland; Sports Council for Wales.

Their job is to:

  • Increase participation in sport within the country
  • Improve the facilities and develop new ones
  • Increase standards of sport in the country
  • Allocate lottery funding

Central Council for Physical Recreation (CCPR)

This council is voluntary and covers all the different governing bodies for each sport in Britain. Its job is to:

  • Encourage sport and physical recreation
  • Advise the governing bodies on legal and financial matters
  • Give advice about British sport to other authorities
  • Develop award schemes (such as the Sports Leader Awards)

The CCPR is funded through donations, sponsorship, grants from the UK sports council and sales of books, magazines and other merchandise.

International Olympic Committee (IOC)

This is the committee that runs the Olympic games. They do the following:

  • Picks where the games are held every 4 years
  • Decide on which sports should be included
  • Helps the host country plan the games
  • Fights against doping and corruption in sport

British Olympic Association (BOA)

This association is in charge of the British Olympic team

  • They raise money so our athletes can compete at the games
  • They work with the governing bodies of each sport to help the athletes prepare for the Olympics
  • They co-ordinate British bids to host the Olympics

National Coaching Foundation (NCF)

The national coaching foundation deals with the education, development and registration of coaches for all kinds of sport in the UK. They try to improve the quality of our coaching at all levels.

Sports Aid Foundation (SAF)

This group helps athletes financially by raising money so they can train and compete. They get money from the national lottery as well as donations, sponsorships and grants from other sources.

Countryside Commission (CC)

These people look after the countryside and advise other groups about using and taking care of the countryside. They set up the Country Code to make sure that the countryside is protected when it is being used for physical recreation.
