Local Sport

  • The aim of this lesson is to find out how local sports clubs are organised and what types of competitions are most commonly used (Equivalent to UK GCSE Physical Education)

Local sports clubs are great for getting all kinds of people with all levels of ability involved in sports. There is often lots to be organised in terms of fixtures, facilities and finances and so most clubs have a committee who take care of these things, so the members can get on with playing!

The following positions are often held on a local sport clubs committee:

Chairperson - Represents the club at the top level and chairs all meetings

Vice-chairperson - Takes over if the chairperson is away

Treasurer - Takes care of all financial matters

Secretary - Organises and take notes at meetings, does other paper-work type jobs

Membership secretary - Deals with memberships for the club, both existing ones and getting new members

Fixtures secretary - Organises matches and competitions, as well as social events

Overall, the local sports club deals with:

  • Administration - Paperwork and organisation which is needed to run the club
  • Facilities - Keeping the pitches/courts and other areas like changing rooms and clubhouse in a good condition
  • Competitions - Organising competitions both within the club and against other clubs and players
  • Coaching - Helping their members to improve their skills

Competitions

Most people who play sports will be involved in some form of competition. These are the three main forms:

Leagues - Everyone in the league plays all the other players or teams, at least once, often twice (home and away). At the end the person with the most points wins. Points are awarded for winning and drawing matches. Leagues are good because they demonstrate consistency of the top team or individual. However they can take a long time to play out.

Knock-outs - Most cup competitions are knock-outs. These are played in rounds. Each team or player plays a game in the first round. If they win they progress on to the second round. If they loose they are out. These are easy to organise, can be completed very quickly and are exciting to watch, although aren't as fair as you only get one chance!

Ladder - All players are listed on a ladder with the best players at the top. Each player can challenge another player, who is within a few rungs above them. If they win, they then take the other players place on the ladder. It only works in individual sports and can be a bit demoralising for new people who must start at the bottom
