Protect the Lead Foot

Explanation: This is a defensive position, however a defender needs to have a plan before the attacker gets too close. Defenders need to decide which way to send the attacker. Sending them to the right side will mean having the left foot as the lead foot.

Description: When getting into the balanced defensive stance protect the lead foot. To do this the shoulders and feet should be facing the ball, but stay at least 4 yards from the ball keeping it outside of the right shoulder.

The lead (left) foot and shoulder should be aligned outside of the opponent's right side. Knees should be bent in the crouched position, weight should be distributed evenly between the balls of the feet, which should be shoulder width apart. The back (right) foot should be pointing in the direction to send the attacker.

Grip the stick with the shake-hands grip.
