Stick Handling

Explanation: Most hockey players use the shake-hands grip as it is very basic, and can easily and quickly be changed to another grip.

Description: The shake-hands grip is easier to start with the hockey stick lying flat on the ground, with the toe pointing up. The next stage is to put both hands on top of the stick handle with the right hand lower on the grip than the left hand. Make sure palms are facing down, and fingers are touching the ground next to the stick. Then pick the stick up and grip it in the same way as for a handshake.

To hold the stick in the reverse shake-hands grip roll it over in the hands so the toe is pointing down. Place the top of the handle in the left hand with the palm facing up. Then place the right hand about 6 inches further down the grip with the palm of the right hand facing down more.

The left hand position is more important because the fingers on this hand turn the stick when passing, dribbling, tackling, or receiving. So the stick should be held firmly in this hand and lighter in the right hand.
