Stop and Turn

Explanation: The stop and turn is one method of changing direction quickly. Changing direction is important in hockey to put a defender off balance, to make it easier to find space and receive a pass.

Description: Again as with the other movements the stick should be held in the shake-hands grip, and starts from a running motion.

Slow the run by shortening the strides then hop and lean in the opposite direction to stop. The feet should be staggered, shoulder width apart, and knees bent. The rear foot must then become the pivot foot to turn the body in a new direction. The lead foot should follow the pivot foot round.

Once the turn has been completed players should be in a position to receive the ball, facing the direction it is coming from. Players should be well balanced, with the head up to decide on options once the ball reaches them.
