Drop Step

Explanation: The drop step is used to keep the ball away from a defender by moving it backwards. It can also be used to make space for a player. Timing is key to the success of this move, if used too early the defender can track a players move and if used too late the defender may have already stolen the ball.

Description: Receive the ball using the forehand receiving technique. Then twist the left hand as in the ball check. The ball should be in the control box, and feet should be shoulder width apart, but staggered, with the left foot in front. Knees should be bent, and body crouched with the stick behind the lower half of the ball.

The next stage is to move the ball and body weight to the back foot at the same time. The left hand is used to turn the stick, make sure to keep the ball at least 30 centimeters away from the feet but within the control box.

Once the ball is at the back foot, stop the ball, move it to the right side of the body, keeping the stick in contact with the lower half. Revert back to the shake-hands grip, and be in a position to dribble, pass, or shoot.
