Ball Tag

Aim: To improve balance and attacking footwork.

How: Use 4 cones to mark out a 20x20 yard square. Place an odd number of at least 9 tennis balls randomly within the square. This drill can be played with 2 people competing against each other, or in teams of 4.

If it is being played with just 2 people then they start from opposite sides of the square and just compete against each other to see who can collect the most balls.

If more players are involved then a tag game can be introduced. The aim of the game is still to collect more balls than the opponents but in the team game, tagging players from the opposing team is allowed. When a player is tagged they have to sit out, and if they are carrying a ball at the time they must leave it inside the square.

However if team 1 tags a player out and then team 1 has a player tagged, team 1's player will be out and the opposing teams player is allowed back into the game. The game continues until all balls are collected.

Progressions:

  • Make the square smaller
  • Have less balls
  • Introduce hockey sticks, so the balls have to be dribbled out of the square.

Coaching Points:

  • Keep feet shoulder width apart to help maintain balance
  • Move on the power points (balls) of the feet
  • Keep the head up
  • Use fakes
