Cone Check

Aim: To improve close control.

How: A 6 inch long piece of plastic piping or a toilet roll is needed for this drill. Put the pipe or toilet roll over the handle of the stick and grip this with the right hand. This gets players used to using the left hand for turning the stick and changing grip.

Put 3 cones down in a line each one being 3 yards apart. Start 2 yards behind the first cone. Quickly move the ball to the first cone and perform a ball check. Do the same for the second and third cones and then on the way back also. If possible time the drill.

Progressions:

  • Move the cones closer together
  • Try to do it quicker
  • Compete against a partner

Coaching Points:

  • Try to keep the ball in the control box.
  • Distribute body weight evenly between the balls of the feet
  • Use the shake hands grip, and the left hand to turn the stick.
