Defend the Box

Aim: To improve balance and defensive footwork.

How: Set up a 5x5 yard box with 4 cones. Grip the hockey stick with the receiving grip. Take up a low, balanced defensive stance at the bottom of the square.

Move forward by pushing off the right foot, placing the left foot forward, then bringing the right foot up to meet it. Continue this until both feet are outside the top of the square. Then start to move back towards the bottom of the square but this time push off the left (lead) foot. This means stepping back with the right foot first and bringing the left foot down to meet it.

Progressions:

  • Make the box bigger
  • Try to go faster
  • Use different paths. i.e move sideways and diagonally across the square.

Coaching Points:

  • Keep feet shoulder width apart to help maintain balance
  • Move on the power points (balls) of the feet
  • Try to keep the head up
  • Keep the head of the stick on the ground
