Drop Step Box

Aim: To improve close control whilst changing direction.

How: Set up a 3x3 yard square using four cones or markers.

Start on the outside of the square in possession of a ball. Then move into the middle of the square keeping the ball next to the stick, once both feet are inside the square change direction. The aim is to move out of the square on a different side.

Repeat this around 10 times or until comfortable with the movement and control.

Progressions:

  • Try to do it faster
  • Make the box smaller so there is less room for error
  • Add a defender who can't tackle but stays close to the ball.

Coaching Points:

  • Try to keep the ball within the control box.
  • Use changes of speed and direction
  • Body weight should be evenly spread between the balls of the feet, which should stay shoulder width apart.
