Aim: To improve the push pass on the move.

How: At least 5 players are needed for this drill. Divide the players into two lines opposite each other around 20-25 yards/strides apart. The ball starts with the line of 3 players.

The first player in this line hits the ball no more than 5 yards in front of themselves. They then run after the ball, get it under control and then push pass the ball to the front player of the other line. After this the player follows their pass to the end of the opposite line.

The receiver controls the ball and repeats the sequence. Keep this going until all players are comfortable in controlling the ball and passing on the move.

Then try the same drill with the backhand push pass, this time when a player pushes the ball out in front they will need to push it slightly to the left.

Progressions:

  • Try to complete the drill faster
  • Make it into a competition if there are more than 1 group of players. See which group can complete a line the quickest.
  • Increase the distance between the lines
  • Put obstacles in the passing line.

Coaching Points:

  • Take a look at the intended recipient before passsing the ball.
  • Use the shake hands grip to hold the stick
  • Make sure the ball is inside the control box before passing
