The Gauntlet

Aim: To improve dribbling.

How: Set up a rectangle which is 10 yards wide and 20 yards long. Put cones at 5 yard intervals down each side to mark it out more clearly.

The attacker or dribbler starts with the ball at one end of the rectangle. The defender starts at the other end 20 yards away. As the attacker starts to dribble the ball forward the defender can move towards the attacker.

As the players get closer the attacker should use changes of pace and direction and different dribbling techniques to try and pass the defender and reach the end line. The techniques the attacker can use include the speed, power, indian, spin, and lifted dribbles.

Have 5 attempts and then swap roles.

Progressions:

  • Reduce the width of the rectangle
  • Add another defender which starts half way down the rectangle and can only move in the front half of it.

Coaching Points:

  • Keep the ball within the control box at all times.
  • Use changes of speed, direction, and dribbling techniques
