Make the Middle

Aim: To improve close control whilst changing direction and avoiding defenders.

How: Mark out a circle with cones that is around 20 yards wide. Then use different colour cones to set up a 5x5 yard square in the middle of the circle. For this drill 1 defender to every 3 or 4 attackers are needed. This drill is better with more players.

The defender(s) start inside of the circle but outside of the center square. These players do not need sticks. The attackers start on the outside of the circle each with a stick and a ball. The attackers then attempt to dribble their ball into the square in the middle of the circle without being tagged by a defender.

If a player makes it there successfully they get a point. Once in the square with their ball under control the attackers must try and make their way back out of the circle. The defender(s) must stay within the circle they are not allowed into the square or on the outside of the circle.

The attacker(s) who is last to be caught starts as the defender(s) next time.

Progressions:

  • Make the circle bigger, or square smaller, or both
  • Set a time limit on attackers getting across the circle

Coaching Points:

  • Keep the ball within the control box
  • Use changes of speed and direction
  • Try to keep feet shoulder width apart, and balance on the balls of the feet.
