Monkey in the Middle

Aim: To improve positional play as a goalkeeper.

How: Mark out a circle with cones that has a diameter of between 15-20 yards. In the middle of this circle use 2 different coloured cones to make a 5 yard wide goal. At least 4 players plus a goalkeeper are needed for this drill.

The goalkeeper starts in the goal, then at least 4 players position themselves around the edge of the circle. 1 of these players starts with a ball and attempts to pass it through the goal to 1 of the other players on the other side of the goal.

The goalkeepers job is to try and block these passes by covering their angles correctly. Continue until either the goalkeeper intercepts 10 attempts or the attacking team make 10 successful passes.

Progressions:

  • Make the goal bigger
  • Make the circle smaller
  • Have more players around the outside

Coaching Points:

  • Remember to stay in the goalkeeping stance
  • Try to maintain balance and quick steps on the balls of the feet.
