On the Move

Aim: To improve positional play as a goalkeeper.

How: The goalkeeper should start on one of the goalposts. A player starts where the shooting circle meets the back line, and starts to dribble around the edge of the circle. As the player is dribbling the goalkeeper needs to change their position to cover the angles.

The goalkeeper should work their way across the goal and as the angle widens they must move off their line to make the goal seem smaller. As the player reaches the back line on the other side the goalkeeper should be next to the other post from which they started.

Progressions:

  • The dribbler starts inside the circle so has less distance to travel, making the goalkeeper shift faster.
  • Have 3 players standing around the outside of the circle one on each side of the goal and 1 at the top of the circle. The ball is then passed between the players to make the goalkeeper move even faster across the goal.
  • Shoot from different angles as the player is dribbling around.

Coaching Points:

  • Remember to stay in the goalkeeping stance
  • Try to maintain balance and quick steps on the balls of the feet.
