On the Run

Aim: To improve the receiving of passes whilst on the move.

How: Set 2 cones 7 yards apart, this will be the receiving area. 15 yards down the field put 2 cones down just 2 yards apart, this will be where the main passer will stand. The two other passers will stand in line with the receiving area, about 3 yards either side of it. Again this can be marked out with 2 cones, 2 yards apart. The cones should make a 'T' shape. The receiving player starts at either end of the receiving area.

As the main passer hits the ball towards the receiving area, the receiving player runs into the area, receives and controls the ball and then plays it to either of the 2 other passers. Once they receive the ball they pass it back to the main passer.

Give the receiver 10 balls to control and pass, then swap roles and repeat the drill.

Progressions:

  • Increase the distance between passers and receiver.
  • Make the receiving area bigger
  • Reduce the receiver to two touches, to control then pass
  • Receive on the backhand side

Coaching Points:

  • Get in line with the balls path
  • Time the run to get into position just as the ball reaches the receiving area
  • Once the ball is under control look up to select a target.
