Push 2 Progress

Aim: To improve the push pass on the move.

How: At least 3 players are needed for this drill. Use the length of half a hockey pitch and an area that is at least 15 yards wide. 1 player starts with the ball and all players start moving up the field in a horizontal line.

The player with the ball then passes the ball to the next player, then the two players without the ball must move so that 1 player is behind the line of the ball and the other player is in front. The player with the ball now must pass to the last player whether they are in front or behind the horizontal line with the ball.

The ball keeps getting passed between all 3 players as they keep moving up the field, and after every pass one player should be in front and one behind the line of the ball.

Progressions:

  • Increase the size of the playing area.
  • Try to complete it faster
  • If possible make it into a competition against another group
  • Add obstacles or defenders

Coaching Points:

  • Hold the stick with the shake hands grip
  • Make sure the ball is in the control box before passing
  • Look up at the target before executing the pass
