Race 2 Ball

Aim: To improve balance and attacking footwork.

How: Mark a starting gate with 2 cones 5 yards apart, 1 player starts at one cone and another player at the other cone. Then from the middle of the starting gate walk 2 yards forward and place another cone down. Do this a second and third time. Then 5 yards beyond the third cone place 2 tennis balls, 1 in line with each starting gate cone.

The coach or another player shouts go or blows a whistle, then both players run as fast as they can, touch the first cone, turn back to the start gate. Then run and touch the second cone and back to the start, then the same with the third cone. Then after getting back to the start gate after the third cone sprint throw to the tennis ball. The first player to touch the tennis ball wins.

Progressions:

  • Increase the distance between the cones
  • Add more cones
  • Run with hockey sticks

Coaching Points:

  • Keep feet shoulder width apart to help maintain balance
  • Move on the power points (balls) of the feet
