Relay Races

Aim: To improve dribbling.

How: Place 2 cones on the ground 3 yards apart to mark a starting gate. Stand in the middle of this gate then walk forward 5 paces, and put another cone on the ground. Then place another 4 cones at 4 yard intervals. Repeat this set up for each team taking part. There must be at least 3 players in a team.

The first player from each line starts with a ball. After a signal from the coach, maybe shouting 'go' or blowing a whistle the first player dribbles there ball up one side of the cones and down the other, then stops the ball in the start gate for the next player. Each player should complete this twice.

This drill is good because it can be adapted in so many ways. For example to make it a bit more challenging the players can dribble in and out of the cones. Or introduce passing, so they dribble up to the top cone and half way down the other side, then pass the ball back to the next player in the line.

Progressions:

  • Place more cones in the line
  • Reduce the distance between the cones

Coaching Points:

  • Use changes of speed and direction
  • Keep the ball within the control box
  • Spread body weight evenly between the balls of the feet, which should stay shoulder width apart.
