Round the Keeper

Aim: To improve shooting in one-on-one situations.

How: The space from the back line up to the 25 yard line is needed for this drill and at least 3 players, 1 being a goalkeeper. Place a 2 yard wide starting gate in the center of the 25 yard line using 2 cones. Place another cone 10 yards to the right and left of the starting gate.

Have a passer stand by one of the wide cones, have the shooter standing in the starting gate, and the goalkeeper on the goal line.

The passer plays the ball in front of the shooter. The shooter can then run to catch the ball, and the goalkeeper can start to move off the goal line. Once the shooter reaches the ball they can decide whether to shoot first time or dribble closer to the goal. This will depend on the goalkeepers position.

Repeat this 5 times with the passer on the right side and then move the passer to the left side.

Progressions:

  • Start from closer to the goal so the attacker has less time to think about how to execute the shot.
  • Allow the goalkeeper to start in a more advanced position.

Coaching Points:

  • Use different shooting techniques, for example the quick hit, backhand, chip, chop, and lob shots
  • Keep an eye on the goalkeepers position and look for any clear openings to goal.
