Shut the Gate

Aim: To improve the jab and block tackle.

How: Set up a rectangle that is 7 yards in length and 5 yards wide using 4 cones.

The defender starts in one corner facing their partner, the attacker. The attacker starts opposite the defender with a ball. The attacker can then move along the 7 yard side changing direction and speed. The defender tracks their moves.

The attacker can then move into the rectangle with the ball at any time, the defender must be ready to react to this and attempt to perform either a block or jab tackle, before the attacker reaches the line.

Repeat this drill 5-10 times and then swap roles.

Progressions:

  • Increase the length of the rectangle
  • Reduce the width of the rectangle so you have less time to react

Coaching Points:

  • Try to stay in a well balanced defensive stance
  • Position yourself so the ball stays in front of the body
  • Keep the head of the stick on the ground
