Square Hit

Aim: To improve passing and receiving.

How: Mark out a 7 yard square with 4 cones, then have 1 player at each corner.

A player starts with a ball and passes it around the outside of the square to the player on their left in a clockwise direction. Keep the ball moving round the square. After the ball has been round the square a few times, switch to go anti-clockwise. Then allow the ball to travel across the body before attempting to control it.

The hit pass should be used for this drill which means using the shake hands grip with hands together. The ball is only going to be traveling a short distance so slide the hands around 30cm down the shaft to gain more control.

Progressions:

  • Make the square bigger
  • Try to move the ball quicker
  • Introduce another ball
  • Play with a defender in the middle.

Coaching Points:

  • Take a look at the target before executing the pass
  • After passing get into a position to receive the ball
  • Make sure the ball is in the control box before passing.
