Target Jab

Aim: To improve the jab kick as a goalkeeper.

How: Set up 5 targets that are 2 yards wide within the shooting circle around 12 yards from goal. 1 of these targets should be in between the goal and the top of the circle. There should be 1 target starting from the back line to 2 yards inside the circle on both sides of the goal. Then there should be 1 more target in between the other 2 on each side of the goal.

The goalkeeper stands in the goal covering the angles correctly, whilst a player stands beside each target with some balls. 1 of the players next to the target on the back line starts the drill with a hard push shot towards the goal.

The goalkeeper executes a jab kick back towards the target where the ball has come from. Then shuffles across the goal to receive a push shot from the next target. This continues through all of the 5 targets.

Progressions:

  • The players change to a quick hit shot.
  • Bring the players closer to the goal
  • Make the targets smaller or move them further away

Coaching Points:

  • Remember to start in the goalkeeping stance
  • Kick with the inside of the foot.
  • Try to maintain balance and quick steps on the balls of the feet.
  • Spread body weight equally between the feet.
  • Cover the angles
