Up, Down, Block

Aim: To improve the block save as a goalkeeper.

How: Place 10 balls each with a 1 yard gap either side, between the penalty stroke spot and the shooting circle around 12 yards from goal.

A player fires the balls low at the goal in quick succession, and the goalkeeper has to get down, block the ball, and then get up again. Do this to save as many of the balls as possible.

Progressions:

  • Bring the balls in line with the penalty spot and repeat the drill
  • Get the shooter to hit the ball harder

Coaching Points:

  • Remember to stay in the goalkeeping stance
  • Try to maintain balance and quick steps on the balls of the feet.
  • Spread body weight equally between the feet.
  • Cover the angles
