Jab Tackle

Explanation: The jab or poke tackle is usually performed one-handed, and is more popular on artificial pitches. It is used in many situations but is not as forceful as the block tackle. It is more often used as a fake to put the dribbler off, not to win the ball outright. If a dribbler sees a stick out to win the ball, they look down to assess the position of the ball and the stick, this slows the dribbler and makes their moves easier to react to or predict. It can also be used to delay an attack and give other players time to get back.

This is mostly used when defenders are in front of the attacker, with the lead foot being the one closest to the opponent. A long reach and quick jab make this tackle more effective.

Description: Start by engaging or giving to get into the right position with the left foot leading and the right shoulder in line with the ball. Have the feet shoulder width apart, knees bent, and body slightly crouched. Hold the stick using the separated shake-hands grip, with the left hand below the level of the left knee, and the head of the stick grounded. Keep both eyes on the ball.

Look for opportunities to jab. If one arises transfer body weight to the lead foot, keep the head of the stick grounded and try and make contact with the lower half of the ball. Bring the stick back to a two-handed grip, and retreat to the correct distance so the right shoulder is once again in line with the ball.

If the defender manages to steal the ball with the jab, they should get it under control with the stick close, and look to dribble, pass, or shoot.
