Straight Line Stepping Stones - Leadership and Teamwork Exercise

Download as a word document

Equipment:

  • Nine bases set in a straight line.
  • Different coloured bibs to identify two halves of the team.

Starting position: (e.g. 8 people, 9 bases)

Each group member stands on a base with an empty base in the middle of the line. Group members get a letter or number. Example: 4321 (in coloured bibs) - ABCD (no bibs)
The team is split into halves and faces toward the empty base.

The challenge:
The task is completed when the halves of the team end up like this:

A B C D – 4 3 2 1 instead of 4 3 2 1 – A B C D

Rules:

  • Only one person may move to a base at a time
  • Must only move forward to a base.
  • Only one person on a base at any one time.
  • When moving to a base, a group member may move forward one base or around a teammate to another base, but never around two teammates at a time.
  • If a rule is broken, or you get stuck, all group members must go back to their original bases.
  • The bases must not be moved.

If there is an uneven number of people doing the task, there should be one person who can observe without helping, but who MUST be prepared to talk at the end, evaluating the group.
