Chicago Marathon

The Chicago Marathon is one of the most popular races in the world amongst both elite and amateur runners. The 2009 race saw 33,475 finishers. It starts and finishes at Grant Park, and is generally held in October.

The first Chicago Marathon was held in 1905, and this was held every year until the 1920's. The race then drifted into the abyss, before making a return following the popularity of other big city marathons and as people developed more health conscious attitudes. The modern era Chicago Marathon has been held every year since 1977.

The race is very popular with amateur runners due to the excellent organisation. The fast course, and large prize fund, also particularly endear the race to elite performers. Several world records have been set on this course.

The Chicago Marathon also makes up one of the 5 World Marathon Majors, along with London, Berlin, Boston and New York.
