Honolulu Marathon

The Honolulu Marathon is currently the 6th largest marathon in the world. Typically entries reach around the 25,000 mark, although in 1995 there was 32,434 participants, making it the biggest marathon in the world at the time.

The race is held in December - making it ideal for escaping to from colder climates. It is a particularly popular race amongst the Japanese - in fact in 2008, 62% of entrants were from Japan. The race has been held annually since 1973.

It is a very challenging race due to the tropical conditions and hilly course. One of the main drawbacks is the 5am start, which does impact upon crowd support and views. Despite the early start many runners still find it very hot and humid as the race progresses. Nevertheless, the Honolulu Marathon remains a popular choice for first time racers.
