London Marathon

The London Marathon is one of the most celebrated events on the sporting calendar, and is run annually in April. One of the special features of the race is the enormous amounts of money raised for charity - over £400million has been raised by runners since the inception of the race.

The race was first held in 1981, and was inspired by the New York Marathon. A wheelchair race was added in 1983. It is now one of the biggest road races in the world, and is one of the World Marathon Majors (along with Berlin, Boston, New York & Chicago). It is the only marathon in the world to be run across two hemispheres.

The 42.195 km course starts at 3 different points around Blackheath, before heading east through Charlton. The routes converge after 4.8 km in Woolwich, and then continue through Docklands. The competitors pass the half way mark as they cross Tower Bridge, before heading towards Canary Wharf. The final leg of the race goes past St Pauls Cathedral, and then continues along the Embankment, where competitors can catch a glimpse of sights such as the London Eye, Big Ben and Buckingham Palace. The race finishes at The Mall, alongside St James' Palace.

The London Marathon is also one the worlds largest sporting participation events, in terms of competitors. In 2010, there were more than 36,000 runners that completed the gruelling race.
