New York City Marathon

The unique atmosphere of the New York Marathon has led to it being dubbed as the worlds favourite race. It is the original big city marathon, and masses of people come to catch a glimpse of the famous city.

It was first held in 1970, with 127 competitors. The popularity is demonstrated by the growth in runners, as the 2009 race saw 43,659 finishers. It is generally held in November.

The course begins on Staten Island, before heading towards Brooklyn. Runners reach the halfway stage as they cross the Pulaski Bridge, before then proceeding into the district of Queens. The race then moves through Manhatten, the Bronx and Harlem, before finishing in Central Park. All 5 boroughs of the city are visited during the marathon.

The New York City Marathon also makes up one of the 5 World Marathon Majors, along with London, Berlin, Boston and Chicago.
