Paris Marathon

The Paris Marathon is one of the most popular road races in Europe. It is generally run in April, and the Parisian sights in the spring make this a beautiful race.

The first Marathon to be run in Paris took place in 1896, with about 200 participants. However the Paris Marathon in its current form has only been in existence since 1976. One of the unique features of the race is the requirement of a doctor's certificate of wellness in order to participate.

The race starts at the Champs-Élysées, and goes past landmarks such as the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower, before culminating with a finish along Fochs Avenue.

Historically the race has had a reputation for poor organisation, however this has clearly changed in recent years. The Paris Marathon now tends to draw a fairly decent elite field. The one remaining disappointing feature of the race is the lack of crowd - the locals seem to have a fairly apathetic attitude to the race. That said, the Paris Marathon has become one of the best, and most loved long distance races in Europe.
