Stockholm Marathon

The Stockholm Marathon has been run annually since 1979. In terms of size it is much smaller than races such as London and New York - in 2009 Stockholm had 18,500 participants. However many critics have said that it is one of the best marathon experiences in the world. Stockholm offers a loud, passionate crowd, and some fantastic views, making this an essential race for serious Marathon runners.

The race starts alongside the 1912 Olympic Stadium, and consists of two laps around the city. The race finishes inside the Stadium with a lap around the track. It is generally run in June.

The Stockholm Marathon differs from most major races in that is is run on a Saturday afternoon. Given this, and that it is run in the middle of summer, it can often create gruelling conditions for the race - the 2009 race saw temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius (85 °F). This makes it a particularly challenging Marathon, and thus it hasn't been conducive to fast times.
