Rugby Union - Variations of the Game

Whilst traditional 15 man rugby union remains the most popular form of the game, several other variations are played and are becoming increasingly popular around the world:

Rugby Sevens

The clue regarding the key difference in this version of the game is in the name! 'Sevens' is played by a team of 7 players, as opposed to 15. It is now played at international level and is seen as an important part of the learning curve for young players.

Given the fact that there is less than half the number of players on the pitch, it is hardly surprising that players have far more space and see more of the ball in 'Sevens'. It is a much simpler and faster game than traditional 15 man union, with less penalties and breaks in play.

The most important attributes for a successful 'Sevens' player are speed, stamina and teamwork. In such an open game there is no escaping a mistake.

Tag Rugby

This variation is very popular amongst children, and is an excellent way for teaching them important lessons about the game. The most important aspect of the game is that it is 'non-contact'. It is therefore safe for children of all ages - boys and girls can also play together. Tag Rugby is the RFU's official variation of the game for under 7's and under 8's.

Players wear either a tag-belt, or tag-shorts, and this serves the purpose of the tackle in a game. Players are 'tagged' instead of tackled. The purpose of the game is to teach players to run into spaces.

Beach Rugby

It doesn't take a genius to work out what the major difference in this variation is! Yes, it is played on the beach, in sand! It is similar to 'Tag Rugby' in that 'tagging' is used rather than tackling, and so it is suitable for players of different ages and sexes to play together.

It can be played as either 5 a side, or 7 a side, and is generally played as a summer sport - mainly due to the weather! It is a fast paced and enjoyable game in a great beach environment, and is very popular - particularly on a hot summers day!
