Sports coaching is a very rewarding thing to do. It can help keep you fit, improve your social skills, and give you a genuine sense of achievement. It is also a popular way of staying involved with the game if you can no longer play yourself. Coaches play a crucial role in the development and growth of players at all levels, and without them the knowledge and sport could be lost.

How do I become a football coach?

Football coaching in England is organised by the Football Association (the FA).

The first step to becoming a coach is to do a 'Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Football'. These are held all around the country, and are organised by county associations. This course teaches the basics that you will need to build upon if you decide to continue your coaching education.

If you have completed your 'level 1', there is a clear pathway of awards to progress onto. This is as follows:

Level 1 'FA' Award

Level 3 'FA' Award/UEFA 'B' LICENCE

UEFA 'A' LICENCE

UEFA 'PRO' LICENCE

If you want to become a football manager at the highest level then progressing all the way along this pathway is crucial. To hold a managerial position in the top flight of a nation's football system it is now a requirement to hold the 'Uefa 'Pro' Licence'.
