Tennis Coaching - Attacking Play

Players must go into every match with an attacking game plan in mind. This will more than likely consist of their strengths, plus trying to exploit any known weaknesses of their opponent.

The match should be planned from start and to finish, from strategies to even what the player should think about when sitting in the chair at the breaks.

Players should not assume they can use the same attacking game plan against all opponents, different methods will be more effective in certain situations.

  1. When playing against a player who covers the court quickly it is important to use a variety of shots. Hopefully mixing it up with different lengths, angles, and spins will keep this type of player off balance and not allow them to attack.
  2. When playing against a larger, slower player it is more important to hit an effective serve. If a player can find the corner of the service boxes with spin to take it further away from their opponent a lot of points could be won. When returning hitting from side to side or front to back would be effective as this type of player is not comfortable when on the move.
  3. A player that is very bulky and muscular will usually have slower reactions and reflexes. So again getting them on the move is important and should be enough to win the points. On the serve players could try the kick serve to the body as this will not give the opposing player time to move out of the way of the ball.

There are 5 basic shots that should be used and varied when attacking an opponent.

  • Down the Line shot
  • Cross Court shot
  • Passing shot
  • Short Shot
  • Drop Shot
