Serves and Returns

The serve is the most important shot of a players game. A good serve can win a player a point with just one hit of the ball, or set them up for an easy winner on the second shot if the opposing player manages to find a return. Technique

Flat Serve

This shot gives a player more time to recover to the mid-court and get into the ready position.

Slice Serve

This is very much a defensive shot, but if played well, can force an opponent into a weak return.

Topspin Serve

When played correctly should just tumble over the top of the net and drop as close to the net as possible on the opponents side.

Return of Serve

To make the return most effective aim the shuttle in the direction of either side tramline (alley) in the mid-court area.

Thrust Launch Serve

This would normally be played from near the net, or if a player isn't able to reach the shuttle in time to play an overhead shot.

Squat Launch Serve

Many amateurs play this shot wrong, because they want to make it drop straight down after clearing the net they think they have to hit it up first, on a looping trajectory.

Crossover Launch Serve

If played correctly it should have just enough power to clear the net but then drop straight down to the floor, making it almost impossible to return effectively.

Kick Serve

This shot involves a player swinging the racket in an upward motion to lift the shuttle high and deep into the opponents court.
