Tennis - Wimbledon

The Championships, Wimbledon, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world. It has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London, since 1877. It makes up one of the 4 tennis 'Grand Slams'.

Grass

The Championships are played annually in late June / early July, and is the only Grand Slam still played on the games original surface: grass. It is widely regarded as the most prestigious of all tournaments, amongst the players.

Traditions

One of the most famous traditions of Wimbledon is the very strict dress code. Competitors are required to wear predominantly white clothing - although the trend in recent years has been to allow increasing levels of coloured accents.

Another popular tradition is the royal patronage of the event. Centre Court houses a 'Royal Box', and competitors are required to bow or curtsy if Her Majesty the Queen or the Prince of Wales are in attendance.

Centre Court

Centre Court at Wimbledon is one of the most famous tennis venues in the world, despite its only normal use being over the Championships fortnight. A retractable roof has recently been added to allow matches to be completed despite the unpredictable British weather. Capacity of the Court is 15,000, and it will also be used for the tennis competition in the London 2012 Olympic Games.
