Volleys - Introduction

Volleys

When an opposing player fails to get depth on their shot move in and hit an approach shot, and then move into the net to hit a volley when the ball is returned. The volley is the least complex shot of them all, mostly because of the footwork being less complicated. However it is much more important to be accurate with a volley, as to not leave the court open to a pass from an opponent.

In the past the technique for the volley used to be very simple compared to that of the ground strokes. It used to be exactly the same stroke on the backhand as the forehand side, except the backhand must be taken further in front of the body.

A volley can be hit with a one or two-handed grip, but with today's speed and spin a player must be very quick and precise to execute an attacking volley at the net. To best produce an attacking volley the continental and western grips have proved the most suitable, because they can help improve speed and spin of the ball.

Drive Volley

To make the return most effective aim the shuttle in the direction of either side tramline (alley) in the mid-court area.

Drop Volley

This shot gives a player more time to recover to the mid-court and get into the ready position.

Backhand Drop Volley

This is very much a defensive shot, but if played well, can force an opponent into a weak return.

Low Volley

This shot involves a player swinging the racket in an upward motion to lift the shuttle high and deep into the opponents court.

Half Volley

This would normally be played from near the net, or if a player isn't able to reach the shuttle in time to play an overhead shot.

Backhand Half Volley

Many amateurs play this shot wrong, because they want to make it drop straight down after clearing the net they think they have to hit it up first, on a looping trajectory.

Approach Volley

If played correctly it should have just enough power to clear the net but then drop straight down to the floor, making it almost impossible to return effectively.

Backhand Approach Volley

When played correctly should just tumble over the top of the net and drop as close to the net as possible on the opponents side.

High Volley

Try and reach the shuttle before it drops to low to make the shot easier and give the opponent less time to reach the net shot.
