Running Shoes & Spikes

A decent pair of specific purpose shoes are essential for the serious runner or athlete. The shoe you wear can completely dictate whether you have a good or bad experience, and more importantly whether you get injured - so it is essential to get it right. Here we will try to give you a basic guide to help you choose the right shoe for you.

Running Shoes

If you are going for a run, it is important to have a decent pair of running shoes, as they can be a crucial factor in injury prevention. They are a very subjective purchase however, and a pair that is better for one person, may not be the best for another. It is therefore important to know your feet! Firstly, it terms of size - it is essential that your running shoes are comfortable. Too big, or too small and running will become a bad and painful experience. It is also worth finding out if you 'pronate' or 'supinate' when running, as some shoes will offer extra support in some areas to compensate for this.

Running Spikes

When you see track athletes in the Olympics, they will normally be wearing spikes. These are essentially lightweight running shoes which increase the traction between athlete and the track. They have 'spikes' inserted into a plate on the base, which prevents slipping over and allows for more energy to be converted into motion.
