Tetrahydrogestrinone (THG) is what’s known as a designer steroid. In this case, the steroid has been manipulated in a lab so that it is not detected by normal steroid testing procedures. After its discovery in 2003, a highly sensitive test has been developed to detect its presence in urine samples.

Medical Uses of Tetrahydrogestrinone
There are no medical uses for THG as it was developed only recently, purely for use by athletes wishing to cheat the system.
Effects on Performance
THG is a very strong and effective steroid, which produces the same anabolic effects as naturally occurring steroids:
- Increased muscle bulk
- Increased muscle strength
- Faster muscle recovery
- Reduced muscle catabolism (breakdown of muscle) following intense exercise which aids muscle recovery and development (not proven as yet)
Side-Effects of Tetrahydrogestrinone
Due to the only recent development of THG, side-effects are unclear, but are thought to be similar to those of other anabolic steroids:
- Infertility (in males and females)
- Acne
- Hirsutism (excessive hair growth occurring in females which follows the pattern of male hair growth, i.e. facial)
- Gynecomastia (development of over-sized mammary glands in males)
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Increased aggression, irritability and mood swings
- Liver disorders
- Acne
- Baldness in males (alopecia)
- Immunosuppression
