Modern girls PE and sports kit is designed to support movement, comfort and confidence, using technical fabrics and sport-specific designs rather than a one-size-fits-all uniform. These days a huge range of options is available. Here we outline and explain some common sports clothing for girls and women in sport.
Leggings
High-waisted leggings are now a staple of girls’ PE and sport. The high waistband provides core support and helps leggings stay in place during running, jumping and stretching. Many are designed to be squat-proof, meaning the fabric remains opaque even when stretched, improving confidence and practicality. Some styles include a scrunch bum seam, which subtly shapes the fabric at the back — more common in fitness and dance than school PE, but reflective of wider activewear trends. Overall, leggings offer warmth, flexibility and full freedom of movement across many activities.
Sports bras
Modern sports bras are designed around activity level and comfort, not just size. Features such as racer-back designs allow the shoulder blades to move freely, making them ideal for running and games. Halter-neck styles are more common in dance and studio-based activities, offering lighter support and a secure feel. Improved fabrics and construction mean sports bras are now breathable, supportive and far more inclusive of different body types and developmental stages.
Shorts
Sports shorts now come in a wide variety of lengths, fits and styles. Fitted shorts often include stretch fabric and a supportive waistband, while looser styles allow airflow and ease of movement. Some designs mirror leggings in construction, including high waists and lining for coverage, helping girls choose what feels most comfortable and appropriate for their sport.
Unitards

Unitards are one-piece garments commonly used in gymnastics, dance and performance-based activities. Modern unitards are made from advanced stretch fabrics that move seamlessly with the body. Their streamlined fit reduces distractions, prevents kit shifting during movement and supports complex skills such as tumbling or balances.
Leotards
Leotards remain a core garment in gymnastics and dance but have evolved significantly. Today’s designs use four-way stretch materials, improved stitching and breathable panels. Modern cuts and fabric choices make them far more comfortable and functional than earlier versions, while still supporting precision and technique.
Activewear tops
Activewear tops now prioritise moisture-wicking and temperature regulation. Lightweight T-shirts, vests and long-sleeve tops help keep pupils dry and comfortable indoors and outdoors. Many are designed with flat seams and stretch panels to reduce irritation during movement.
Hoodies and tracksuit tops
Hoodies and tracksuit tops are widely used for warm-ups, outdoor PE and team sports. Their popularity reflects the blending of sport and everyday clothing, often referred to as “athleisure”. Modern versions balance warmth with breathability, making them practical as well as familiar and confidence-boosting.
