Sprint Training & Sprint Workouts

How to run faster. Here we explain the finer points of sprinting technique for the 100m, 200m, and 400m with practice drills, training sessions, technical advice and strength training.

Hurdles

Hurdles involve running (not jumping) over 10 barriers. The two main hurdling events are sprint hurdles (75m to 110m depending on age and sex) and the 400m hurdles. Here we explain the hurdling technique as well as some simple drills to help learn or improve your hurdling.

Javelin Throwing

Discus

Four sets of related drills created by throws coach John Painter can be performed pretty much anywhere and build technique and strength.

Shot Put

Here we explain the basics of both linear shot technique and rotational shot put technique. Shot put technique is learned through a number of drills which are grouped into related sets and break the skill down into smaller manageable parts.

Hammer

The hammer throw technique is quite different from all the other throws. It is a rotational technique where the thrower aims to turn in the circle with gradually increasing speed with the elite throwers managing four turns before releasing. Throws coach John Painter has broken down the technique into four drill sets making it easier to learn and retain the technique.

Middle Distance

It is the intention in following schedules to cover age groups; Junior (12/13 years), Intermediate (14/15 years) and Senior (16/17) years using the English Schools T&F County standards as a benchmark. It is important to recognise that the schedules presented do not include a racing programme. Adjustments need to be made to the training programme prior to competition. There should a reduction in training load two to three days prior to any competition to allow the athlete to perform to the best of their ability.

Long Jump

High Jump

How to high jump. Here we explain the technique of high jumping as well as how to go from beginners scissor technique through to the more competitive Fosbury flop.

Triple Jump

Triple Jump is probably the most demanding of the jumping events in terms of stress on the joints and injury risk. Correct technique and training are important with the jumper aiming to make each of the three phases equal rather than a long hop, short step and long jump as many beginners end up doing.
